Exploring Yaba: Lagos' Creative Tech Hub

Once known primarily as a bustling commercial district, Yaba has transformed into Lagos' undisputed tech and creative hub. Often called "Yabacon Valley," this neighbourhood is where Nigeria's tech revolution is happening in real time. The story of Yaba's transformation begins with CcHub (Co-Creation Hub), which opened its doors in 2011 and quickly became a launchpad for some of Nigeria's most successful startups. Today, the surrounding streets are filled with co-working spaces, tech offices, and creative studios. But Yaba isn't just about tech. The neighbourhood's creative energy spills into every corner — from the murals that adorn building walls to the independent galleries showcasing emerging Nigerian artists. For food, Yaba offers some of the most authentic and affordable Lagos cuisine. The buka scene here is legendary, with spots like Mama Cass serving home-style amala and ewedu that draws crowds from across the city. For a more modern twist, The Yellow Chilli Yaba offers Chef Ade's take on contemporary Nigerian cuisine. The University of Lagos campus, which borders Yaba, adds a youthful energy to the area. The campus itself is worth a visit — the lagoon-side walkways and the university's botanical garden are surprisingly peaceful escapes from the city's bustle. If you're visiting on a weekend, check out the Yaba Market — one of Lagos' oldest markets and still one of its most vibrant. The tech accessories section is famous, but the fabric and food sections are equally worth exploring. Getting to Yaba is easy via the Yaba Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stop, making it one of the most accessible neighbourhoods in Lagos.
