Weekend Getaways: Day Trips from Lagos Worth Taking
By Emeka Nwosu·January 15, 2026·2 min read
Sometimes even the most devoted Lagosian needs a break from the city's relentless energy. Fortunately, there are several incredible destinations within a few hours' drive that make for perfect weekend escapes.
Idanre Hills in Ondo State (about 4 hours from Lagos) is one of Nigeria's most spectacular natural attractions. The ancient town sits atop a cluster of hills, connected by 640 hand-carved steps. The views from the summit are breathtaking, and the history of the community that lived there for centuries is fascinating.
Closer to home, the Omu Resort in Ibeju-Lekki (about 45 minutes from VI) offers a mini zoo, swimming pools, and boat rides — perfect for families looking for a relaxed day out without the long drive.
Olumo Rock in Abeokuta (about 2 hours) combines history, culture, and adventure. Climbing the rock gives you panoramic views of Abeokuta, and the museum at the base tells the story of the Egba people who used it as a fortress.
For beach lovers, the Whispering Palms resort in Badagry (about 1.5 hours) offers a quieter alternative to Lagos' busy beaches. The resort sits on the lagoon with palm-fringed grounds and a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere.
Badagry itself is worth a full day — the slave route historical sites, including the Point of No Return and the Seriki Abass slave museum, are powerful and important experiences that every visitor to Lagos should have.
La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort in Ibeju-Lekki offers an African-themed beach experience with chalets built over the water, boat rides through mangrove forests, and traditional entertainment.
Pro tip: Leave Lagos before 6 AM on Saturdays to avoid traffic. The roads are emptiest between 5 and 7 AM, and you'll have most of the day ahead of you by the time you arrive at your destination.
